Patho-Biology of Mastitis

چکیده

Over the past thirty-five years, milk production has dramatically increased in Western Europe and North-America. Producers attempt to increase milk yield as a means an increase profitability. However, several studies have demonstrated that high-producing cows are at increased risk of infectious diseases (Grohn et al., 1994). Among those diseases, clinical mastitis is the most costly disease of the dairy industry (Esslemont and Peeler, 1993). Costs associated with clinical mastitis include decreased production, cost of treatment, extra labor, and an increased rate of cow replacement (Bartlett et al., 1990). The immune response to an incoming infection into the mammary gland is of utmost importance for the health of the dairy cow. Understanding the basic principles of this immune response is important to be able to guide dairy farmers with regard to management of risk factors and determining reasonable goals with regard to somatic cell counts and clinical mastitis. The goal of this paper is to explain the basic components of the immune response to intramammary infection.

Nocardia cyriacigeogica from Bovine Mastitis Induced In vitro Apoptosis of Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cells via Activation of Mitochondrial-Caspase Pathway

Nocardia is one of the causing agents of bovine mastitis and increasing prevalence of nocardial mastitis in shape of serious outbreaks has been reported from many countries. However, the mechanisms by which this pathogen damages the bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMECs) is not yet studied. Therefore, this study was designed with the aim to evaluate the apoptotic effects elicited by Nocardia a...

Role of neutrophils in protection of udder from infection in high yielding dairy cows

Protection of the mammary gland against mastitis-causing pathogens is mediated by many factors in thegland and blood circulation. The professional phagocytic cells of bovine udder, polymorphonuclearneutrophils (PMN) and macrophages, comprise the first line of defense against invading mastitis pathogens. Most researchers now accept that the PMN is a key factor in the cows’ defense against intrama...

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Subclinical Mastitis in Iranian Holstein Cows

The present study aimed to estimate the effects of parity, calving season and year of calving on the prevalence of subclinical mastitis in Holstein cows. A total of 2682 records from 869 Holstein cows in a large dairy farm (Azarbaijan province, Iran), respecting the period from 2006 to 2009, were collected. Data was analyzed using Proc Mixed of SAS software by MIVQUE method. Subclinical mastiti...
